We of the Harrisburg Club usually begin, as we often do, with a lecture on early 1900’s mural artist Violet Oakley (first woman to receive a public mural commission) and a tour of the building she painted, the State Capitol, often referred to as the “Palace of Art.” Did our Lecturer really hear from Violet in her sleep? So she says! Violet’s work is absolutely incredible and makes our Capitol the most beautiful in the nation. Find out for yourself!

A Harrisburg journey is not limited to the indoors. A Dauphin County Parks & Recreation Environmental Educator can guide us along the towpath of Wildwood Park followed by an afternoon wagon ride around a gourd and sunflower farm. In the fall, we can decorate “ghost” gourds. Meadowbrooke Gourds in Carlisle is open year round.

Harrisburg is very close to Hershey so off we can go to the Hershey Story Museum and ride the Trolley Tour around town where the street lights are in the form of Hershey Kisses. We will learn the story of Mennonite Milton Hershey. He was not just about making chocolates. He and his wife Catherine were philanthropists. Their influence on Central Pennsylvania continues to this day. We can visit their beautiful home to further immerse ourselves in the Hersheys and their international travels.

On your way to Harrisburg, you may want to take a few days in Philadelphia, see that City of Independence, and then take a guided tour bus to Harrisburg through Amish Country or get on the train and come directly to Harrisburg. But there’s more to see in Amish Country. You can get up close and personal with an Amish Grandmother who will tell you all about her life. And we can visit the Railroad Museum and take a train ride from Strasburg to Paradise.

You will be intrigued with stories from a Lancaster County award winning historian who can tell us all about the Underground Railroad as an active hub in the nearby town of Columbia, and we will walk with him on an historic tour of the town. Harriett Tubman herself visited Columbia many times. Columbia has a fascinating clock museum.
The Rolls Royce Museum can be a touring spot as can the car museum in Hershey if you all are into that sort of thing.

Gettysburg isn’t just about this key battle of the Civil War. We can visit Dwight Eisenhower’s Farm and a 19th century home in the city to hear the story of how the family put up with the war going on right outside their door.We are eager to host you! Come on down!
